Shopping for Health Insurance with Acupuncture Benefits in Mind

Overwhelmed with the project of choosing your health insurance plan for 2017? If you’re looking for acupuncture benefits, check out these health insurance plan options that cover some sort of coverage for acupuncture in Portland, Oregon.  (If you have a job that offers integrative healthcare benefits, no need to read further! • When doing a search for the best health insurance options for a 34-year-old, you get the most bang for your buck RE: acupuncture coverage with Moda plans. The Moda Health Beacon Be Safe, Beacon Be Prepared and Beacon Be Protected allows for about 8-10 visits a year ($1,000 max benefit). These Moda plans are a bit spendy while ranging from $366 per month to $413 per month.
  • The next best option for acupuncture in Portland benefits – and I use the term “best” loosely - are the Providence Plans, allowing for a maximum of 3 visits a year. Three acupuncture visits a year is probably not enough to be sure you stay happy and healthy all year round.
  • The Silver and Gold Regence plans will cover acupuncture,  but these plans start at $402/month. If you're otherwise healthy and you're just looking for acupuncture coverage, this probably isn't the best option for you.
  • And if you're considering choosing a Zoom+ plan for 2017 be warned that they have completely obliterated their coverage of alternative healthcare benefits.  Yes, that's right - that awesome Zoom+ plan you had last year that gave you unlimited healthcare benefits is just a memory. Zoom+ is no longer covering alternative care benefits.

Pro tip: Don’t spend your money on any of these plans if you are looking for only for acupuncture benefits – you’re better off using the “prompt-pay” rates. Ask your practitioners for details. If you plan on going to the acupuncturist twice a week and are otherwise healthy, do not spend more than $364 a month on health insurance to get acupuncture coverage.

Bottom line: If you’re healthy, do not suffer from any chronic illnesses, and want to be sure you have all the money you need to see the acupuncturist as needed, check into high deductible health savings account plans. A health savings account (HSA) is a tax-advantaged medical savings account available to taxpayers in the United States who are enrolled in a high-deductible health plan (translation: high out-of-pocket deductible, but lower monthly cost). The funds contributed to an account are not subject to federal income tax at the time of deposit. HSA and FSA (Flex Spending Account) dollars can be used at To The Point PDX.

If you have questions on the best plan for being sure you can afford to see the acupuncturist in 2017, contact Columbia Benefit Solutions. They are the experts in helping you choose your health insurance.

And if your employer provides health insurance coverage to you and this includes alternative care benefits - BE SURE TO USE THEM. You’re one of the lucky ones! Many employers offer $1,500 (or more!) of integrative healthcare benefits a year. If you don’t use these benefits, you LOSE THEM. Don’t leave $1,500 on the table! Get yourself some acupuncture today!
